The Dogeaters of Springfield and other modern tales

For days now, one topic has dominated the world: Trump claims that migrants from Haiti are eating pets in Springfield. Everyone is making jokes about Trump's state of mind and posting videos of cats and dogs, which are currently seen on social media in cooking pots and the like.

I feel more like crying than laughing. I ask myself:

How is it possible that a powerful country like the United States of America always has only two candidates for the presidential election, who then engage in months of sometimes insulting verbal battles?

How is it possible that we, the spectators, are more interested in this circus than in the current injustices and suffering in the world?

How is it possible that some ugly male dictators dominate a large part of world politics, constantly violating human rights (let alone animal welfare and environmental protection), trying to control their own people and preferably other nations too, and that we – our Western politicians – still shake their hands and make trade deals with them?

Where are the young women and men of the new generations, where is the political engagement, the passion for social justice, animal welfare, and environmental protection – where have the wonderful values of the Western world gone?

Where are you, the faces of the heroes of the future?

They are stuck on TikTok and Instagram, suffocating in self-love and vanity, while artificial intelligence quietly and relentlessly overtakes our human intelligence and learns how to control us. The precious values of the Western world are degenerating amidst now hundreds of sexual orientation options and endless debates about migration.

Migrants are so evil, they even eat our pets.

Yet, eating dogs was common practice here in Europe until recently. “In the decade before the First World War, around 84 tons of dog meat were slaughtered annually in the German Reich. Between 1920 and 1924, the official figures were around 115 tons. The unreported number was considerably higher. A change to the law, which banned the slaughter of dogs for meat, did not come until 1986.” (Source: Wikipedia)

In many countries, dogs were slaughtered up until this millennium and are still eaten today: “In May 2020, China released a national livestock catalogue, which explicitly excludes dogs. This means that the sale of live dogs and dog meat for consumption is banned in China. In South Korea, a law was passed in 2024 that bans the consumption and sale of dog meat from 2027.” (Source: Wikipedia)

In emergencies and extreme situations, people have repeatedly slaughtered dogs and even resorted to cannibalism (polar expeditions, poverty).

So, the tale of the dog-eaters of Springfield is not entirely absurd.

However, the discussion and ridicule of it highlight the poverty in our own minds, which, unfortunately, is no fairy tale.

An interesting footnote for all those who like to criticize other beliefs/ cultures/ religion: “The consumption of dog meat is not permitted according to Islamic and Jewish dietary laws.”
